Round 6 Heats Up with a ‘K-Adebeyor’ Moment!
A missed penalty, a mass brawl, a worldie finish, a goal-line clearance, five goals, and an injury-time turnaround—FC Seoul vs. Daegu FC had it all.
Round 6 Round-up
After a disappointing international break for South Korea, the return of the K League this weekend was a welcome relief. And nothing wiped clean memories of the Jordan draw —or the dire Oman game—quite like FC Seoul vs. Daegu FC. The match was undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend, and season, as FC Seoul secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a dramatic late-late turnaround. After surrendering their 1-0 halftime lead, they eventually edged out a 3-2 victory, with Jeong Seung-won commanding the headlines.
That win moved them within two points of early leaders Daejeon Hana Citizen, who were held to a draw by Gwangju FC—Gwangju’s fourth stalemate of the season. Meanwhile, the East Coast Derby wasn’t a classic, but Pohang joined FC Seoul in stringing together consecutive wins, easing their way out of a mini-crisis with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over a stuttering Ulsan HD—made even more impressive given their injury struggles.
Sunday, on the other hand, was a "1-0 to the Arsenal" kind of day, with Gimcheon Sangmu, Jeju United, and—most controversially—Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors all securing wins to nil.
‘K-Adebeyor’ - How Did It Come To This?
Booing players is a rare sight in the K League, even between rivals—and especially over multiple seasons. However, the fallout between Jeong Seung-won and the Daegu FC fans since his departure in 2021 has been anything but ordinary.
The breakdown of their relationship is complex, stemming from disputes over alleged contract demands to the now-discredited ‘No Mask’ Halloween party scandal. That incident—sensationalized at the time—saw a group of Daegu players having drinks after a humiliating 5-0 home defeat, right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the full truth remains debatable, the backlash was severe, and Jeong ultimately found himself hounded out of the club where he made his professional debut and played 121 times.
Ever since, Daegu FC fans have relentlessly jeered him—home and away. And in the ten appearances he’s made against them across three different clubs, Jeong has clearly been desperate to score. That moment finally arrived in the 91st minute this past weekend, when he smashed home a stunning equalizer. Overcome with emotion, he sprinted the length of the pitch to cup his hand to his ear in front of the furious Daegu supporters.
While his FC Seoul teammates quickly ushered him away, his former Daegu colleagues were less forgiving. A mass brawl erupted, with veteran goalkeeper Oh Seung-hoon storming half the pitch to confront Jeong. Both players were eventually booked, but the loss of composure had clearly affected the Daegu side. Soon after the restart, Daegu pushed forward on a free kick and Jeong picked up a Ki Sung-yueng pass in his own half and set on his way to assist Moon Seon-min for the winner, further rubbing salt in the wounds of the shocked Daegu FC fans.
The aftermath of the event caused much debate among fans, coaches and players
