K League R9 Review: Daejeon past a big test, Ulsan flounder again and Daegu look deep in trouble
Round 9 in the K League saw an end to one of the longest losing runs—and the extension of one of the longest as well. Gangwon FC put to bed their 17-game losing streak at Ulsan with an impressive 2-1 victory against the defending champions, who continue to struggle for form. Questions are now being asked about Kim Pan-gon’s ability to turn things around.
On a less positive note, Daegu FC extended their losing run to seven games—just one behind the longest streak the league has seen since implementing the relegation system in 2012, a record held by Gangwon FC. Jeonbuk turned it on against the managerless Daegu side in the first half, taking a three-goal lead into the break. It could’ve been more after a shambolic opening 45 minutes.
Pohang’s good run came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at Jeju United, with Nam Tae-hee scoring his first goal since returning to the K League to seal the win.
At the top, Daejeon passed a significant test of their title credentials with an impressive win over second-placed and in-form Gimcheon Sangmu.
Gwangju FC began their ACLE adventure with a win over FC Seoul—their fifth straight victory over the capital club. Meanwhile, FC Anyang continued their pattern of alternating wins and losses over the last six fixtures with a win over bottom club Suwon FC..
